Big news, Wichita! USD 259, in partnership with RRCBA, has secured a $15.3 million grant from the Department of Energy’s Renew America’s Schools program. This is a game-changer, bringing energy upgrades to 21 schools, primarily in disadvantaged areas. But this isn’t just about new windows or HVAC systems; it’s about building a brighter future.
#### What Does This Mean for Our Community?
This grant isn’t just an investment in buildings—it’s an investment in people. It opens doors to job creation and training, focusing on skilled labor like energy auditors, a role currently scarce in Wichita. Local unions will have opportunities to hire and train individuals, prioritizing those from low-income areas, and ensuring that our community directly benefits.
#### The Accountability Factor
We’re committed to holding USD 259 and our local labor unions accountable to ensure these opportunities reach those who need them most. This means tracking where the funds go, who gets hired, and how the savings on utility and maintenance costs are reinvested into our community.
#### How Should Savings Be Reinvested?
Energy upgrades can save the district hundreds of thousands annually. We want your input: should savings go towards more educational resources, job training programs, further energy upgrades, or something else? Let your voice be heard!

Our next community meeting is on October 13th at 6 PM via Zoom.
Together, we can ensure this grant not only improves our schools but uplifts our entire community. Let’s rally together, hold stakeholders accountable, and make the most of this incredible opportunity!
