Echoes of the Past: A Sober Reflection on Inequality

Updated: Feb 1, 2024

Introduction: What's up, Fam! I recently saw a video on Instagram of a young black man describing a scene in a Denny's where he engages in an unexpected but profound conversation with an older white gentleman. This interaction is a portal into our shared, yet often unspoken, history.

The Revelation: In this heart-to-heart, the older man, a retired firefighter, reveals his past actions of neglect towards Black people in emergencies. He stated that he can still hear the screams of the black men, women, and children that he left in burning buildings in his sleep. This confession is a jarring reminder of the systemic injustices that have plagued various professions.

The Young Man's Realization: Our young brother is hit by the realization that these injustices were not isolated incidents but part of a larger systemic problem that has long undermined the Black community's well-being.

Linking Past to Present: Today, remnants of these injustices linger, subtly influencing how Black individuals are treated across various sectors.Consider the story of one of my clients, who just this year discovered his parents had been overcharged for their homeowners insurance by about $500 a month for over 20 years. This isn't just a case of financial oversight; it's a modern manifestation of the systemic inequalities that have burdened our community for generations. These ongoing issues, from redlining to discriminatory lending practices, continue to undermine the economic stability and growth of Black families.

Statistics and Facts: The numbers speak volumes:

  • Redlining and Housing: Enduring impacts of redlining have left a wealth gap, with Black families often denied equitable housing opportunities.

  • Loan Disparities: African Americans face higher interest rates, creating barriers to home ownership and business development.

  • Employment: Job seekers with African American-sounding names experience fewer callbacks, signifying ongoing employment biases.

  • Police Interactions: Data shows a disproportionate rate of stops, searches, and tickets for Black individuals.

  • Insurance Inequities: In the insurance sector, racial disparities manifest in higher rates for Black policyholders.

Conclusion: This eye-opening conversation at Denny's isn't just a moment of reflection; it's a call to action. It underscores the importance of our work with the Community Benefits Agreement (CBA). Just like the CBA’s commitment to building a more equitable community, we too must join hands in a collective effort. It's about looking out for each other, pooling our resources, and building a firm foundation for our community. By working together, we can create sustainable change and ensure that the biases of the past do not dictate our future.

Through love and unity, we can transform these challenges into opportunities for growth and empowerment. Our collective effort with the CBA is a testament to our resilience and determination to forge a better future. Let’s continue this journey with love and commitment, building a legacy of equity and prosperity for our community.

Replying to

People really don't realize how deep the hatred and contempt runs and how much it's effected our lives as ADOS people here in the states.
